Akins Feed & Seed in Griffin Georgia recommended Good Friday, April 10 as a safe planting day in the middle GA region.  Greensun will facilitate planting the community victory garden on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, April 9-11, 2009.  On Friday April 17, from 3:30-5:00 the FFA Supervised Ag Experience will have a Planting Party onsite.

Advice on planting dates varies. Hastings Victory Garden Seminar leader recommended planting after April 15th.  Akins Feed & Seed in Griffin Georgia recommended planting on Good Friday, April 10th.  Shawn Fry our landcape designer stated after the Canadian Geese return it is safe to plant and they have already flown over Upson County.

Herb garden plants include Basil, dill, rosemary, lemon grass, catnip, chives, lavender and more.

Recommended for hill planting in the vegetable garden are pumpkin, canteloupe and watermelon.

Row crops include tomatoes, purple hull peas, black eyed peas, sugar snap peas, English peas, Mesclun lettuces and radishes.

Garden flowers include Skyscraper Sunflowers, Giant  Zinnias (Violet Queen & Enchantress) and Crackerjack Marigolds.

NASA ranks Gerbers #4 of clean air plants

Greensun received a truck of 30  Gerber (Botanical – Gerbera) Daisies  in assorted bright colors from a very helpful and generous local grower for the community victory garden project. Click here to see flower planting slideshow.

We are especially appreciative of the clean air impact Gerber Daisies were found to have being ranked #4 of NASA’s Top 10 Clean Air Plants.

The grower stated these flowers thrive and bloom with low nigrogen, High PK and PH between 5.5-6.  Limestone around the plants was suggested and lime in the bed.  The plants should be planted only as deep as the pots. Roots should be loosened if pot bound as these plants came from a greenhouse environment. Gerbera is from the sunflower family originating in South Africa.

 Because it is early summer, Gerbers will be planted in a sunny location, kept evenly moist in well-drained soil where they may bloom on until frost.

Plants he included in the landscape border design for the Victory Garden site included blueberries, sunflowers and strawberries for border plots.  Shawn suggested blooming flowers for pest control including marigolds.  Other flowers to highlight the entrance and sign border beds with bright colors include zinnias, lantana, verbena, daisys and sunflowers.

Spring 2009 is a community garden beginning and the start of our Middle Georgia Plant and Seed Exchange.  We urge everyone in the middle Georgia Flint River basin to plant a home or community garden.  We will be glad to share seeds and cuttings of native plants.  With this exciting new gardening resource in our community of Thomaston Upson Georgia, our aim is to educate and connect with youth, seniors and others who would especially benefit to have a source of locally grown fruits and vegetables.

The garden site is a beautiful, sunny spot on the  Barnesville Street Montessori School and Barnesville Street Community Church campus.  Partners include Diversified Site Solutions, B & B Feed and Seed, FFA and UGA Upson 4-H Club.

You do not have to be a member or resident to participate in the Greensun Plant and Seed Exchange.

The garden will be a place for the community to grow together. We encourage gro green teacher development, students, seniors and both experienced and new gardeners to get involved in the project.

The main goal of the garden project is to better provide our community with the opportunity to grow live green food locally.  We will learn together how to meet our needs with locally grown fruits, vegetables and herbs.  We will learn organic methods including fertilizers, pest control, composting and more.  We will use rain barrels to collect water.

“Matt Andrews is a good Scout.”  This is an accurate statement describing a generous leader who has given his time and skill to our community victory garden project. Without him, the project could not have gotten off the ground, literally.  Matt Andrews, Owner of DSS, came to the victory garden site with his excavator, tractor and tiller and worked to remove a gravel parking lot at the old R.C. Cola Building in Thomaston, Georgia. Cody Boyt worked to till the soil using a small farm tractor and rear tiller.

We are happy Matt likes to play in the dirt! 

He has given us the opportunity to make the project a once in a lifetime experience for transformation in our community.  DSS is a dream come true for the partners in this project.  Because of Diversified Site Solutions, this will be now be a viable SAE (supervised ag experience) for FFA.  Also University of Georgia Upson 4-H is working onsite in May for a 4-H Service Project.  Children at the Barnesville Street Montessori School will participate in each stage of the garden development and growth.

Diversified Site Solutions is second to none for site preparation and has broken the barrier so our community can work together on this victory garden effort.
